Ashley Phillips seals Middlesbrough's 4-3 victory over Norwich with late winner

Ashley Phillips scored in added time as Middlesbrough beat Norwich City 4-3 at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday. Sky Sports reported that the defender converted Will Lankshear's pass across the penalty area after the visitors had recovered from 3-1 down to draw level.

Mohamed Toure put Norwich ahead after just 50 seconds, but Sebastian Berhalter equalised and Amario Cozier-Duberry then gave Middlesbrough the lead. Berhalter scored again in the 36th minute, giving Kim Hellberg's team a two-goal cushion at half-time after an opening period in which both sides created chances.

Norwich's substitutes changed the game after the interval. Jovon Makama scored in the 70th minute and Jacob Wright equalised five minutes later, following up after Anthony Musaba's shot was saved. Phillips ultimately settled the contest with his first career league goal, securing Middlesbrough's third consecutive home victory.

The win follows a mixed run across two competitions for the hosts. Goal's results listing records a 1-1 Championship draw at Burnley on 2 September and a 1-0 league victory at Queens Park Rangers three days later. Middlesbrough then lost 3-0 at Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on 8 September before returning to league action against Norwich.

Saturday's result continues Middlesbrough's recent success in this fixture. Extratime's match records show that Boro had already beaten Norwich twice during the previous league season: 2-1 away in August 2025 and 1-0 at home in January 2026. The two meetings before that both finished level, with a 3-3 draw at Norwich followed by a goalless match on Teesside. Those draws came in October 2024 and April 2025, respectively.

Middlesbrough's next scheduled Championship assignment is another home game, against Millwall on Tuesday 15 September, according to Goal's fixture list. A visit to Birmingham City follows on Saturday 19 September. Those fixtures give Boro two further league matches in the coming week after a contest in which they regained the lead in added time despite surrendering their earlier advantage.
