Islam Makhachev Defends Lightweight Title with Dominant Submission Victory Over Charles Oliveira at UFC 300
Islam Makhachev solidified his status as the lightweight division's dominant force Tuesday night, successfully defending his UFC lightweight championship with a masterful third-round submission victory over Charles Oliveira in the main event of the historic UFC 300 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Makhachev (26-1) showcased his complete skill set throughout the fight, mixing elite wrestling with improved striking to control the pace against the former champion. The Dagestani fighter secured the victory at 4:18 of the third round with a perfectly executed rear-naked choke, forcing Oliveira to tap out in what marked his second successful title defense.
"This was the toughest fight of my career," Makhachev said through his translator during the post-fight interview. "Charles is a very dangerous fighter, especially on the ground, but I was able to impose my game plan and show that I'm ready for any challenge in this division."
The fight lived up to expectations through the first two rounds, with both men having their moments. Oliveira looked dangerous early, nearly securing a submission attempt in the first round, while Makhachev gradually took control with his superior wrestling and positional grappling as the fight progressed.
The turning point came in the third round when Makhachev secured a takedown and methodically worked to the Brazilian's back. Despite Oliveira's renowned submission defense and scrambling ability, the champion's technique and patience proved too much as he locked in the fight-finishing choke.
Oliveira (34-10) showed tremendous heart and skill in defeat, proving once again why he's considered one of the most dangerous fighters in the lightweight division. The Brazilian's 19 finishes at lightweight remain a divisional record, and his performance against Makhachev demonstrated that he remains a legitimate threat to any champion.
With the victory, Makhachev extends his winning streak to 14 fights and continues the dominant legacy established by his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov. UFC President Dana White hinted at a potential superfight with featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, setting up what could be one of the biggest fights the promotion could make in 2026.
