Israel Adesanya Reclaims Middleweight Title with TKO Victory Over Dricus du Plessis at UFC 295
The Nigerian-New Zealand striker knocked out the South African champion in the third round to become a two-time UFC middleweight champion.

Israel Adesanya reclaimed his throne as UFC middleweight champion Tuesday night, delivering a spectacular third-round TKO victory over Dricus du Plessis in the main event of UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Adesanya, fighting in his first title fight since losing the belt to Sean Strickland eight months ago, looked sharp and focused from the opening bell. The former champion utilized his superior striking technique and reach advantage to frustrate du Plessis throughout the early rounds before finding the finishing sequence that would restore him to championship glory.

"This feels incredible," Adesanya said during his emotional post-fight interview. "I never doubted I would be back here. Dricus is a tough champion, but I knew if I stayed patient and trusted my skills, the moment would come. To do it here at Madison Square Garden makes it even more special."

The finish came at 2:47 of the third round when Adesanya landed a perfectly timed left hook counter that dropped du Plessis. The Nigerian-born striker immediately followed up with ground strikes, forcing referee Herb Dean to step in and wave off the contest as the Garden erupted in celebration.

Du Plessis, who had been riding a 10-fight winning streak entering the contest, showed tremendous heart and durability throughout the fight. The South African champion had his moments, particularly in the second round where he pressed forward aggressively and landed several hard shots to the body.

The victory marks Adesanya's return to the top of the middleweight division after what he described as a period of reflection and growth following his loss to Strickland. The 34-year-old striker now reclaims his position as one of the UFC's biggest stars and most skilled champions.

With the title back around his waist, Adesanya will likely face a queue of eager contenders. Names like Sean Strickland, Robert Whittaker, and rising prospect Khamzat Chimaev are all potential opponents for the newly crowned champion's first title defense.
