Iga Swiatek Advances to BNP Paribas Open Final After Straight-Set Victory Over Maria Sakkari
The world No. 1 defeated the Greek star 6-3, 6-4 to reach her third consecutive Indian Wells final and extend her winning streak to 19 matches.

Iga Swiatek continued her dominant start to the 2026 season on Friday evening at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, defeating Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the BNP Paribas Open final and extend her remarkable winning streak to 19 consecutive matches dating back to the start of the year.

The world No. 1 from Poland was in complete control throughout the 89-minute semifinal, using her devastating forehand and improved serve to dictate play against the hard-hitting Greek veteran. Swiatek won 78% of her first-serve points and converted four of her seven break-point opportunities while never facing a break point on her own serve.

I felt really good out there tonight, especially with my serving, Swiatek said during her on-court interview. Maria is such a tough competitor who hits the ball extremely hard, so I knew I had to be aggressive from the first point. To reach another final here at Indian Wells feels amazing, and I am excited for the opportunity to win this title again.

The victory sets up a final showdown between Swiatek and either Elena Rybakina or Jessica Pegula, who were scheduled to play in the second semifinal later Friday evening. Swiatek has won both previous meetings with Rybakina and leads Pegula 4-1 in their head-to-head series, giving her confidence regardless of her opponent.

Sakkari, who was seeking her first WTA 1000 final since 2021, fought valiantly throughout the match but could not find answers for Swiatek consistent power and court coverage. The 28-year-old from Athens managed 18 winners but also committed 24 unforced errors as she pressed to match the intensity of the top-ranked player.

Swiatek current winning streak is the longest of her career and includes titles at the United Cup, Australian Open, and Qatar Open. Her dominant form early in the season has established her as the clear favorite for the upcoming French Open, where she will attempt to win her fourth Roland Garros title in five years.

The BNP Paribas Open final is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, with Swiatek looking to capture her second Indian Wells title after winning the tournament in 2022. Her combination of power, consistency, and mental toughness has made her nearly unbeatable on the WTA Tour, and another title victory would further cement her status as the dominant force in women tennis heading into the clay court season.
