Wycombe appoint Tom Hounsell permanently before 4-1 defeat by Luton
Wycombe Wanderers appointed Tom Hounsell as their permanent head coach on Saturday, but his first match after the announcement ended in a 4-1 home defeat by Luton Town. The appointment followed an unbeaten caretaker spell, BBC Sport reported, before four different Luton players scored at Adams Park to give the visitors victory in League One.
Watch the highlights:
Hounsell had overseen four wins and a draw in five matches across all competitions after taking interim charge following Michael Duff's dismissal. That sequence represented a marked change from Wycombe's opening seven games of the season, none of which they had won under Duff. Hounsell's early results included successive away victories in the league, according to the BBC's report.
The new head coach was already familiar with the club, having joined as a first-team coach in February 2025 under Mike Dodds, Duff's predecessor. In a statement reported by BBC Sport, Wycombe expressed satisfaction with the progress made by Hounsell, the coaching staff and the players during his temporary tenure. The permanent appointment kept responsibility for the team with the coach who had led that improvement.
Luton quickly changed the mood on the pitch. Kasey Palmer opened the scoring with a shot into the top-left corner, and Jamie Donley added a second before half-time. Sky Sports reported that the visitors had controlled the early stages, with those two finishes leaving Wycombe facing a two-goal deficit at the interval on the day of their managerial announcement.
There was little opportunity for a recovery after the restart. Nahki Wells scored from close range less than a minute into the second half, before Devante Cole made it four with six minutes of normal time remaining. Cole finished after Wycombe goalkeeper Conor Hazard had used his foot to stop a shot from Emilio Lawrence, according to Sky Sports' match report.
Jack Grimmer scored for Wycombe in stoppage time, but his effort could only reduce the margin of defeat. The result ended Hounsell's unbeaten start in charge, separating a five-match caretaker run without a loss from a difficult opening afternoon as the club's confirmed head coach. Luton finished with goals from Palmer, Donley, Wells and Cole.
