Tottenham plan Marbella training camp after winless six-game start
Tottenham have organised a warm-weather training camp in Spain after opening their Premier League season without a win in six matches. BBC Sport reported that the squad were expected to travel to Marbella on Sunday, with the club seeking time for a substantially rebuilt group to bond following Saturday's 1-1 draw at Manchester United.
Watch the highlights:
The report said Spurs added 10 players during a summer in which they spent more than £250m on new signings. Manager Roberto de Zerbi described building a team from that collection of players as his immediate objective. He stressed the need for his squad to work for one another in both attack and defence, rather than simply function as a group of individuals.
Tottenham left Old Trafford with a point after Dominic Solanke headed an equaliser in the second minute of added time. They had been trailing 1-0 when substitute Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off in the 78th minute. Referee Stuart Attwell dismissed the Uruguay midfielder for headbutting Luke Shaw during a confrontation that followed Bentancur's challenge on the United defender and Shaw's shove in response.
De Zerbi acknowledged that Bentancur had made a mistake but said the incident had been followed by greater courage and energy from his remaining players. In comments reported by BBC Sport from his post-match press conference and Sky Sports interview, the manager welcomed their refusal to accept defeat. His praise centred on the reaction and character he believed Tottenham had shown while a player down.
The late goal did not lift Spurs out of the relegation zone. They have three points from their first six league matches and have scored only three goals, with 19th-placed Coventry the only side to have scored fewer. According to BBC Sport, this is the fourth league season in Tottenham's history in which they have failed to win any of their opening six fixtures.
The planned Marbella trip therefore comes between another unsuccessful attempt to secure a first league victory and Tottenham's next match against Coventry on 19 October. De Zerbi said the United performance had offered evidence of his players attacking and defending collectively. The camp is intended to give the new-look squad further time together as he tries to turn that response into a more cohesive team.
