McIlroy Surges Into Contention at Players Championship
Rory McIlroy vaulted into contention at The Players Championship with a brilliant second-round 65 at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday, moving to 8-under par and within two shots of the lead held by Scottie Scheffler. The Northern Irishman's bogey-free round featured seven birdies and showcased the form that has made him one of golf's most consistent performers over the past decade.
McIlroy's round was highlighted by a spectacular eagle on the par-5 11th hole, where he holed out from 147 yards with a wedge shot that never left the flagstick. The shot sent the gallery into a frenzy and provided the momentum McIlroy needed to close his round with three consecutive birdies on the back nine.
"I felt like I had good control of my ball all day," said McIlroy after signing his scorecard. "The conditions were perfect for scoring, and I was able to take advantage. This golf course requires precision, but when you're hitting it well like I was today, you can make some birdies out there."
Scheffler maintains his lead at 10-under after following up his opening 64 with a solid 68 in more challenging afternoon conditions. The world number one appeared unfazed by the pressure of leading golf's unofficial fifth major, consistently finding fairways and greens while avoiding the big numbers that can derail a round at TPC Sawgrass.
The leaderboard is tightly bunched heading into the weekend, with Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele both sitting at 9-under, just one shot behind Scheffler. Hovland's second-round 66 was particularly impressive, as the Norwegian navigated the treacherous 17th island green with ease while many other contenders struggled with the iconic par-3.
Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate over the weekend, with gusty winds and possible afternoon thunderstorms in the forecast. McIlroy's experience in challenging conditions could prove valuable, as he seeks his first Players Championship title and second victory of the 2026 season. The 34-year-old has been knocking on the door of another major championship, and a strong weekend performance at TPC Sawgrass could provide the confidence boost he needs heading into the Masters next month.
