Scheffler Takes Early Lead at Arnold Palmer Invitational
World number one Scottie Scheffler delivered a masterful opening round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, carding a bogey-free 64 to take a two-stroke lead after the first day of competition at Bay Hill Club in Orlando. The defending Masters champion showcased the form that has made him the world's top-ranked player, combining pinpoint accuracy with exceptional putting on the challenging Florida layout.
Scheffler's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 6th hole, where he struck a magnificent 4-iron from 210 yards to within three feet of the pin. The 29-year-old Texan added six birdies throughout his round, including three consecutive birdies on holes 14-16 that separated him from the field.
"I felt really comfortable with my game plan today," said Scheffler after signing his scorecard. "Bay Hill is always a tough test, but I was able to stay patient and take advantage when the opportunities presented themselves. The putter was really working for me, which is always a good sign."
Sitting two strokes back in a tie for second are Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele, both of whom posted solid 66s in the difficult conditions. McIlroy, seeking his first victory since 2024, showed glimpses of his best form with six birdies and just one bogey. The Northern Irishman's round was anchored by excellent iron play, hitting 15 of 18 greens in regulation.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational field is particularly strong this year, with several major champions vying for the prestigious title. Tiger Woods, playing his first tournament since the Genesis Invitational, posted an even-par 72 and will need to make significant improvements over the next three days to contend.
Weather conditions are expected to remain challenging throughout the week, with gusting winds and potential afternoon thunderstorms forecast. Scheffler's ability to navigate these conditions while maintaining his aggressive style will be key to his chances of claiming his second victory of the 2026 season. The tournament continues with second-round play on Friday, as players look to position themselves for a weekend charge at one of golf's most prestigious events.
