Brook's 91 Puts England 195 Runs Ahead of Pakistan at Headingley
Harry Brook made 91 as England reached 366-8 on a rain-shortened second day of the first Test at Headingley. The hosts closed 195 runs ahead of Pakistan after Ali Usman claimed five wickets.

Harry Brook scored 91 as England strengthened their position against Pakistan on a shortened second day of the first Test at Headingley. BBC Sport reported that England reached 366-8 by the close, giving the hosts a lead of 195 runs after Pakistan had been dismissed for 171 on the opening day.

Watch the highlights:

Morning rain delayed the start until 14:45 BST, but England added 254 runs to their overnight score of 112-2. Brook’s innings became central to that progress after Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha dropped him at second slip on one off Khurram Shahzad. England were 205-4 at the time, leading by 34 runs.

Brook shared a 120-run partnership with recalled batter Dan Lawrence, who made 51. The England vice-captain mixed attacking strokes with runs behind square before left-arm spinner Ali Usman bowled him as he tried to play into the leg side. Brook’s dismissal left him nine runs short of a century.

Earlier, Jordan Cox and captain Joe Root put on 150 for the third wicket. Cox made 73, his first Test half-century, before edging Usman to the wicketkeeper. Four deliveries later, Shahzad trapped Root lbw for 66, briefly giving Pakistan two important wickets in quick succession.

Lawrence’s half-century helped England maintain control before he top-edged a sweep against Usman. The spinner later removed Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson with consecutive deliveries, completing his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket and finishing the day with figures of 5-92. Despite that late success, Pakistan remained well behind on first innings.

BBC Sport reported that England scored at about 4.5 runs per over during the day’s available play. Cox had also been dropped on 57 before his dismissal, while Brook’s reprieve proved especially costly for Pakistan. With England holding a 195-run advantage and two first-innings wickets still available, the first Test moves into day three with the hosts in a commanding position.
