Abbott Takes Four as Hampshire and Yorkshire Trade Blows in Relegation Fight
Kyle Abbott delivered figures of 4-17 before Yorkshire's bowlers mounted a forceful reply on the opening day of their County Championship match against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl. BBC Sport reported that Yorkshire were dismissed for 173 after choosing to bat, while Hampshire closed on 60-4, still 113 runs behind.
Watch the highlights:
Abbott set the tone with an opening spell of 2-3 from nine overs, seven of them maidens. He trapped Will Luxton leg before wicket and had Sam Whiteman caught behind, then later removed Matthew Revis and Jonny Bairstow lbw. His full return came from 18 overs and included the 50th wicket of his career against Yorkshire.
Hampshire's support bowlers maintained the pressure. Eddie Jack dismissed Adam Lyth and later had Ben Coad caught behind, while left-arm spinner Andrew Neal claimed his first three Championship wickets in only his second appearance in the competition. Neal removed James Wharton, George Hill and debutant Jafer Chohan as Yorkshire's innings threatened to end quickly.
The visitors recovered some ground through their lower order. Dom Bess and Ben Cliff added 53 for the final wicket before Sonny Baker dismissed Cliff with a bouncer. Bess finished unbeaten on 40, giving Yorkshire a total that proved enough to put Hampshire under pressure during the final 26 overs of the day. Six overs had been lost to brief rain interruptions.
Ben Coad made the first breakthrough in Hampshire's reply by removing Ali Orr, with Bairstow completing the catch while standing up to the stumps. Hill then produced eight overs for only four runs, including four maidens. He bowled Toby Albert and dismissed Jake Lehmann and Baker lbw, leaving Nick Gubbins unbeaten on 30 at the close.
The match carries direct importance in the Division One relegation race. BBC Sport said Hampshire began it 17 points ahead of Yorkshire, with the teams positioned on opposite sides of the relegation line. Hampshire collected three points and Yorkshire one from the opening day, but Hill's late spell prevented Abbott's earlier work from giving the home side clear control. With 14 wickets falling and both teams' seamers finding success, the first-innings deficit remains the central contest when play resumes.
