Xander Schauffele Wins The Players Championship with Clutch Eagle on 17th Hole
Xander Schauffele produced one of the most memorable shots in Players Championship history on Sunday, holing out from 158 yards for an eagle on the famous 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass to claim a one-shot victory at golf's unofficial fifth major. The Olympic champion's spectacular approach shot from the middle of the fairway found the bottom of the cup, sending the gallery into a frenzy and capping off a remarkable final round of 66.
Schauffele entered the final day three shots behind overnight leader Viktor Hovland, but methodically worked his way up the leaderboard with six birdies in his first 16 holes. However, it was his approach shot on the par-3 17th that will be replayed for years to come, as his perfectly struck 8-iron landed softly on the green before trickling into the hole for just the third eagle ever recorded on the iconic island green.
"I honestly thought it was going to be about 15 feet short when I first hit it," Schauffele said while holding the crystal trophy. "But it had the perfect flight and just kept carrying. When it went in, I couldn't believe it. You dream of moments like that, especially on a hole as famous as 17. This is definitely the most special shot of my career."
The eagle moved Schauffele to 15-under par and gave him a two-shot lead playing the final hole. He calmly two-putted for par on 18 to finish at 15-under, one shot ahead of Hovland, who could only manage a par on 17 after Schauffele's heroics. Rory McIlroy finished third at 13-under after a final-round 68.
Hovland, seeking his third PGA Tour victory, played solid golf throughout the final round but couldn't match Schauffele's dramatics when it mattered most. The Norwegian made a brave birdie attempt on 18 that just missed, leaving him to settle for second place and a consolation prize of $2.16 million.
"Xander played incredible golf today, and that shot on 17 was just phenomenal," Hovland said graciously. "You can't really be upset about losing to a shot like that. I played well enough to win, but sometimes golf throws you those magical moments, and today belonged to Xander."
The victory is Schauffele's second Players Championship title, having also won in 2022, and his eighth career PGA Tour victory. The $4 million winner's check moves him to the top of the FedEx Cup standings and provides significant momentum heading into the major championship season that begins with the Masters in five weeks.
Schauffele's eagle on 17 was reminiscent of other famous shots on the hole, including Tiger Woods' hole-in-one in 2001 and Sergio Garcia's skip shot in 2013. The 30-year-old Californian has now established himself as one of golf's premier clutch performers, with his Olympic gold medals and multiple PGA Tour victories in pressure situations.
With the victory, Schauffele extends his remarkable record in big events and positions himself as one of the favorites for the upcoming Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.
