Elena Rybakina Defeats Jessica Pegula 6-3, 7-5 to Advance to BNP Paribas Open Final
Elena Rybakina booked her place in the BNP Paribas Open final Thursday evening at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, overcoming a spirited challenge from Jessica Pegula to win 6-3, 7-5 in a high-quality semifinal encounter. The Kazakhstani star showed tremendous mental fortitude after falling behind 5-3 in the second set, reeling off four consecutive games to close out the match and reach her first final at the prestigious California tournament.
Rybakina dominated the opening set with her powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes, breaking Pegula's serve twice while dropping just three games. The 2022 Wimbledon champion was particularly effective on her first serve, winning 85% of those points and consistently pushing Pegula into defensive positions with her deep, penetrating shots from both wings.
The second set proved much more competitive, with Pegula elevating her level and taking advantage of several uncharacteristic errors from Rybakina's racket. The American broke serve early and maintained her advantage until serving for the set at 5-4, when Rybakina raised her intensity at the crucial moment and broke back with a series of blistering winners.
Rybakina sealed her comeback with a spectacular service game at 6-5, hitting three aces including a 119 mph serve down the middle to close out the match. The victory was her most impressive of the tournament to date, demonstrating the type of clutch performance that has made her one of the most feared players on the WTA Tour when she's healthy and confident.
"I'm really proud of how I fought back in that second set," Rybakina said during her on-court interview. "Jessica played incredible tennis and really pushed me to raise my level. When I was down 5-3, I just tried to stay aggressive and trust my shots. The crowd here has been amazing all week, and I'm excited to have another chance to play for a title."
The victory sets up an intriguing final matchup for Rybakina, who will face either world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka or rising star Qinwen Zheng depending on the outcome of Thursday's second semifinal. The 24-year-old has now reached three WTA finals this season and appears to be returning to the form that saw her capture her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.
For Pegula, the defeat was disappointing but represented another solid result in what has been a consistent 2026 season. The American reached her third semifinal of the year and will look to build on this performance as the tour moves toward the clay court season and ultimately the French Open. Both players showcased the high level of tennis that has made the BNP Paribas Open one of the most prestigious events outside of the Grand Slams.
