Sabalenka Praises Future Star Mboko While Zverev Joins Tennis Elite at Indian Wells
World number one Aryna Sabalenka defeated Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko while praising her as a future Grand Slam champion, as Alexander Zverev achieved historic Masters milestone.

Aryna Sabalenka maintained her pursuit of a maiden Indian Wells title by overcoming Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in straight sets, while heaping praise on her young opponent and predicting future Grand Slam success for the 19-year-old competitor.

The world number one secured a 7-6 (7-0) 6-4 victory over Mboko in what proved to be a more challenging encounter than the scoreline suggested. The opening set required a tiebreak before Sabalenka finally broke through Mbokos resistance in the fifth game of the second set to secure her semifinal berth.

Sabalenka was effusive in her praise for the Canadian teenager, describing her as a future star destined for Grand Slam glory. The Belarusian expressed genuine admiration for the next generation of players, highlighting their fearless approach and aggressive playing style that she believes will shape tennis future.

Its incredible to see these young girls these days, how brave they are, Sabalenka observed. They go out there, they go after their shots, theyre aggressive, theyre fighting. Its incredible to see and for sure we are going to play many more matches in the future.

The four-time Grand Slam champion now faces 14th seed Linda Noskova in the semifinals after the Czech player ended Australian qualifier Talia Gibsons remarkable run. Gibson, ranked 112th in the world, had become the first qualifier in eleven years to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals before falling to Noskova 6-2 4-6 6-2.

Gibsons achievement in reaching the quarterfinals represented a breakthrough moment for the 21-year-old Australian, who was competing in her first WTA 1,000 main draw. Her previous victory over seventh seed Jasmine Paolini demonstrated the depth of talent emerging in womens tennis.

Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev achieved a historic milestone by becoming only the fifth player in tennis history to reach the semifinals of all nine ATP Masters 1,000 tournaments. The German secured his place in this exclusive club with a commanding 6-2 6-3 victory over Frances Arthur Fils.

Zverevs achievement places him alongside tennis legendary Big Four - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray - as the only players to accomplish this feat across the Masters 1,000 series. The milestone carries particular significance given the elite company he now joins.

Its very special to be one of five players in history to ever do it, Zverev reflected. For sure, yeah, its something that Im very proud of. The German has captured five Masters 1,000 titles during his career, though a Grand Slam championship continues to elude him despite reaching three major finals.

Zverev faces a significant challenge in the semifinals against world number two Jannik Sinner, who dismantled American Learner Tien 6-1 6-2 in just 66 minutes. The reigning Wimbledon champion holds a commanding 5-0 head-to-head advantage over Zverev, creating an uphill battle for the German.

Sinner continues his quest for a first Indian Wells title and his initial trophy of 2026, following disappointments at the Australian Open semifinals and Qatar Open quarterfinals. The Italian has demonstrated exceptional form throughout the tournament, suggesting he will pose a formidable obstacle to Zverevs championship aspirations.

The mens semifinals will also feature world number one Carlos Alcaraz against Daniil Medvedev, after both players eliminated British opposition. Alcaraz defeated Cameron Norrie 6-3 6-4, while Medvedev ended defending champion Jack Drapers title defense with a 6-1 7-5 victory.

As the Indian Wells tournament reaches its climax, the combination of emerging talent like Mboko and historic achievements like Zverevs Masters milestone demonstrates tennis continued evolution and the enduring appeal of its most prestigious events outside the Grand Slams.
