Zion Williamson Scores 44 Points as Pelicans Defeat Kings 129-124 in Play-In Race
Zion Williamson delivered one of his finest performances of the season on Sunday night, erupting for 44 points and 11 rebounds to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a crucial 129-124 victory over the Sacramento Kings at Smoothie King Center. The dominant display moved the Pelicans into the 10th and final play-in tournament spot in the Western Conference, giving them renewed hope of extending their season beyond April.
Williamson was unstoppable attacking the rim throughout the contest, shooting 18-of-25 from the field while also showing improved range by connecting on 3-of-5 three-point attempts. The 26-year-old forward took control in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points in the final frame to help New Orleans overcome a seven-point deficit entering the period.
"Zion was absolutely incredible tonight," said Pelicans coach Willie Green after the victory. "His energy, his physicality, his shot-making - everything was at an elite level. When he plays like that, he's one of the most unstoppable forces in the league. We're going to need more performances like this if we want to make the playoffs."
The victory was particularly important for New Orleans, who had lost four of their previous six games and were in danger of falling out of the play-in race entirely. Brandon Ingram provided excellent support with 28 points and 7 assists, while CJ McCollum added 22 points in a balanced offensive attack that saw the Pelicans shoot 52% from the field.
Sacramento, despite strong performances from De'Aaron Fox (32 points, 9 assists) and Domantas Sabonis (24 points, 14 rebounds), couldn't match New Orleans's intensity in the crucial moments. The Kings remain in ninth place but saw their lead over the Pelicans shrink to just half a game in the tight Western Conference playoff race.
"We competed hard tonight, but Zion was just phenomenal," said Kings coach Mike Brown. "When a player like that gets going, it's really difficult to stop him. We had good looks and played well offensively, but they made more plays down the stretch."
Williamson's 44-point performance was his highest-scoring game since returning from the knee surgery that cost him most of the 2024-25 season. The former Duke star has been gradually rounding into form over the past month, and Sunday's explosion suggests he's finally back to the level that made him one of the NBA's most promising young stars.
With 18 games remaining in the regular season, every contest carries enormous significance for teams like New Orleans fighting for their playoff lives. The Western Conference features one of the most competitive races in recent memory, with just four games separating the sixth-seeded Phoenix Suns from the 12th-place Portland Trail Blazers.
The Pelicans will look to build on this momentum when they host the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night, while Sacramento returns home to face the Los Angeles Clippers as both teams continue their quest for postseason basketball.
