Paolo Banchero Scores Career-High 48 Points as Magic Defeat Nets 129-124 in OT
The young star's explosive performance helps Orlando move within one game of Brooklyn in the Eastern Conference play-in race with a thrilling overtime victory.

Paolo Banchero delivered the performance of his young career on Sunday night, scoring a career-high 48 points to lead the Orlando Magic to a thrilling 129-124 overtime victory over the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center. The 23-year-old forward's spectacular display moved Orlando within one game of Brooklyn in the Eastern Conference standings, keeping their playoff hopes very much alive with 19 games remaining in the regular season.

Banchero was unstoppable from all areas of the court, shooting 17-of-29 from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point range while adding 9 rebounds and 7 assists. The second-year star took control in overtime, scoring 8 points in the extra session to help Orlando pull away from a stubborn Nets team that fought hard despite missing several key players.

"Paolo was absolutely incredible tonight," said Magic coach Jamahl Mosley after the victory. "His maturity and shot-making ability were on full display, and he made winning plays when we needed them most. Performances like this show why we believe he can be a franchise cornerstone for years to come."

The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout regulation, with both teams trading leads and momentum swings. Orlando appeared to have the game won when they held a 6-point lead with 90 seconds remaining, but Brooklyn rallied behind Mikal Bridges' clutch three-pointer with 8.3 seconds left to force overtime.

In the extra session, Banchero took over completely, scoring on three consecutive possessions to give Orlando control. His most spectacular basket came with 2:14 remaining in overtime, when he drove past two defenders and finished with a thunderous dunk that brought the Orlando bench to its feet and silenced the Brooklyn crowd.

"I felt locked in from the first quarter," Banchero said during his post-game interview. "My teammates did a great job of finding me in good spots, and I was able to get into a rhythm early. Games like this are why we play - the playoffs are still within reach, and we're not giving up on our goals."

Brooklyn was led by Bridges' 32 points and Nic Claxton's 18 points and 14 rebounds, but they couldn't match Orlando's clutch execution down the stretch. The loss was particularly frustrating for the Nets, who have struggled with consistency all season and now find themselves in danger of missing the play-in tournament entirely.

The victory was crucial for Orlando's playoff positioning, as they continue to battle several other teams for the final play-in spots in the Eastern Conference. With Banchero playing at an All-Star level and the team showing significant improvement under Mosley's guidance, the Magic appear poised to make their first postseason appearance since 2020.

Banchero's 48-point explosion was the highest-scoring game by a Magic player since Dwight Howard scored 45 points in 2007, and it served as a reminder of the incredible potential that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
