Wakefield beat Warrington 23-10 to claim first Super League title
Wakefield Trinity won the Super League Grand Final for the first time on Saturday, beating Warrington Wolves 23-10 at Old Trafford. BBC Sport reported that the victory made Trinity champions of England for the first time since 1968, with Daryl Powell's team securing the trophy on their first appearance in the competition's Grand Final.
Watch the highlights:
The result completed a rapid return from relegation in 2023. Wakefield played in the Championship in 2024, returned to Super League in 2025 and finished fourth in this season's regular standings. Their route through the play-offs included victories against Leigh Leopards and Wigan Warriors, before they overcame a Warrington side making its fifth Grand Final appearance.
Wakefield established a 19-0 half-time lead through tries from Cameron Scott, Isaiah Vagana and Jazz Tevaga, with Max Jowitt converting all three. Lachlan Walmsley's pass created Scott's opening score, while Tom Johnstone collected Jake Trueman's kick and supplied Vagana for the second. Tevaga then scored from close range, and Jack Sinfield added a drop goal before the interval.
Warrington found an opening after the break when Corey Hall was sin-binned for a high tackle on Arron Lindop. According to Sky Sports' match report, Ewan Irwin then created space for Lindop to score and converted the try to reduce the deficit to 19-6. A potential Matty Ashton try was subsequently disallowed for a forward pass, preventing Warrington from cutting the gap further at that stage.
Once Wakefield were back to 13 players, Johnstone scored to make it 23-6. Sky Sports reported that the winger also received the Rob Burrow Award after contributing in attack and defence. Lindop crossed again late in the game, but Irwin missed the conversion, leaving Warrington 13 points behind as time ran out on their challenge.
Wakefield join Wigan, St Helens, Leeds, Bradford and Hull KR as Super League title winners. For Warrington, the defeat extended a run of unsuccessful Grand Final appearances and left their wait for a first league championship since 1955 unresolved. For Trinity, a season that began as only their second back in the top division ended with the championship.
