Inter Milan Defeats Juventus 2-1 in Thrilling Derby d'Italia to Extend Serie A Lead
Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal in the 78th minute as Inter moved five points clear at the top of the Serie A table with a crucial victory over their rivals.

Inter Milan delivered a masterclass performance on Friday night at San Siro, defeating Juventus 2-1 in a pulsating Derby d'Italia that extended their Serie A lead to five points and showcased why the Nerazzurri are considered the favorites to claim their second consecutive Scudetto with just 10 matches remaining in the campaign.

The match was a tactical chess match from the opening whistle, with both teams showing tremendous respect for their opponent's quality while looking for opportunities to exploit defensive weaknesses. Inter struck first in the 34th minute when Marcus Thuram capitalized on a defensive error by Federico Gatti, sliding the ball past Wojciech Szczesny after excellent buildup play from Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Juventus responded with characteristic resilience just before halftime, as Dusan Vlahovic scored his 20th league goal of the season with a towering header from a Federico Chiesa cross. The Serbian striker's goal silenced the San Siro crowd and provided the visitors with crucial momentum heading into the intermission, setting up a fascinating second half between two teams desperate for victory.

"This was exactly the kind of performance we needed against Juventus," Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said during his post-match interview. "We showed great character and determination, especially after they equalized. Lautaro's goal was magnificent, but the whole team deserves credit for the way we controlled the match in the final 30 minutes."

The decisive moment came in the 78th minute when Lautaro Martinez produced a moment of individual brilliance, receiving a pass from Alessandro Bastoni before cutting inside and unleashing a curling effort that found the top corner despite Szczesny's desperate dive. The Argentine captain's 25th goal of the season proved to be the winner and demonstrated why he's considered one of Europe's elite strikers.

Juventus pushed desperately for an equalizer in the closing stages, with Massimiliano Allegri introducing fresh attacking options including Moise Kean and Fabio Miretti. However, Inter's defensive organization, marshaled brilliantly by Milan Skriniar and Alessandro Bastoni, held firm under pressure to secure three crucial points that could prove decisive in the title race.

The victory extends Inter's unbeaten streak to 15 matches across all competitions and moves them five points clear of second-place AC Milan, who face Roma on Sunday. For Juventus, the defeat represents a significant blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four and securing Champions League qualification for next season. With the gap to fourth place now at seven points, the Bianconeri face an uphill battle to achieve their minimum objective for the campaign.
