New Zealand All Blacks Defeat Australia 35-20 in Rugby Championship Opener Behind Beauden Barrett Masterclass
Barrett scored two tries and kicked five conversions as New Zealand dominated the Wallabies in front of 80,000 fans at Eden Park in Auckland.

The New Zealand All Blacks reminded the rugby world why they remain the gold standard in international rugby on Friday evening, dismantling Australia 35-20 in the opening match of the 2026 Rugby Championship at a sold-out Eden Park, with veteran fly-half Beauden Barrett delivering a masterclass performance that showcased his enduring brilliance at the highest level.

Barrett was simply unstoppable throughout the 80 minutes, scoring two brilliant individual tries while converting five of New Zealand six tries with metronomic accuracy. The 34-year-old playmaker rolled back the years with his decision-making and execution, constantly finding gaps in the Australian defense with his footwork and vision while orchestrating the All Blacks attacking play with the authority of a conductor leading a symphony.

It feels incredible to be back at Eden Park playing in front of our home crowd, Barrett said during his post-match interview. The team has been building toward this moment all year, and to start the Rugby Championship with such a complete performance gives us tremendous confidence moving forward. Australia brought their best effort, but we were able to execute our game plan perfectly.

New Zealand took control early through their dominant forward pack, with captain Sam Cane and lock Brodie Retallick providing the platform for their dangerous backline to flourish. The All Blacks scored six tries in total, with winger Will Jordan adding two spectacular scores that highlighted his pace and finishing ability, while fullback Jordie Barrett contributed one try and showed excellent positional play throughout.

Australia fought valiantly despite being outclassed for large portions of the match, with center Samu Kerevi and flanker Michael Hooper leading by example in their efforts to keep the Wallabies competitive. Captain James Slipper scored two tries for the visitors, but Australia was unable to match New Zealand intensity at the breakdown and struggled to contain the home side fluid attacking patterns.

The victory continues New Zealand recent dominance over their trans-Tasman rivals and sets up what promises to be an exciting Rugby Championship campaign. All Blacks coach Ian Foster praised his team preparation and execution, noting that the performance represented months of hard work coming together at exactly the right time.

With this commanding victory, New Zealand sends a clear message to South Africa and Argentina that they remain the team to beat in international rugby. The All Blacks will next face South Africa in Cape Town in two weeks, in what promises to be a titanic clash between the two most successful teams in Rugby Championship history. For Australia, the challenge now becomes regrouping quickly for their next match against Argentina as they look to bounce back from this disappointing start to the tournament.
