Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6 to Reach Indian Wells Semifinals
The young Spaniard continues his impressive form with a straight-sets victory over the former world No. 1 in the desert.

Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the Indian Wells semifinals Wednesday evening with a commanding 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory over former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev at the BNP Paribas Open. The 22-year-old Spaniard showcased the aggressive baseline game and mental toughness that has made him one of tennis' brightest young stars, never allowing the experienced Russian to find his rhythm throughout the match.

Alcaraz took control early in the opening set, breaking Medvedev's serve in the fifth game with a series of blistering forehands that consistently pushed the lanky Russian behind the baseline. The young Spaniard's court coverage was exceptional throughout the evening, tracking down seemingly impossible shots and turning defense into attack with his trademark explosive groundstrokes.

The second set proved more competitive, with both players holding serve comfortably until reaching the tiebreak. However, Alcaraz raised his level when it mattered most, winning the first four points of the tiebreak and never looking back. His forehand winner down the line to close out the match had the Stadium 1 crowd on their feet in appreciation of a masterful performance.

"I felt really good out there tonight," Alcaraz said during his on-court interview. "Daniil is such a tough competitor and has given me problems in the past, so I knew I had to be aggressive from the start. My forehand was working really well, and I was able to dictate most of the rallies. Playing in front of this crowd here in the desert is always special."

The victory extends Alcaraz's impressive hard court form and positions him as the favorite heading into the semifinals, where he will face either Taylor Fritz or Alexander Zverev. The young Spaniard has now won 18 of his last 20 matches and appears to be building momentum as the tennis season progresses toward the clay court swing.

For Medvedev, the defeat continues a frustrating pattern of early exits from major tournaments this season. The 28-year-old Russian has struggled to find consistency in 2026 and will need to regroup quickly as the tour moves toward the Miami Open next week. His powerful baseline game was neutralized by Alcaraz's superior court positioning and aggressive return of serve, highlighting the challenge that younger players now pose to the established order in men's tennis. The result serves as another indication that Alcaraz is ready to compete for the biggest titles in the sport.
