Colorado Avalanche Stave Off Elimination With Overtime Win Against Dallas Stars in Game 6
Valeri Nichushkin's goal 2:43 into overtime lifted the Colorado Avalanche past the Dallas Stars 3-2, forcing a decisive Game 7 in their Western Conference semifinal series on Thursday.

The Colorado Avalanche kept their Stanley Cup hopes alive Thursday night with a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory over the Dallas Stars at Ball Arena, forcing a decisive Game 7 in their Western Conference semifinal series. Valeri Nichushkin was the hero, burying a rebound past Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger 2:43 into the extra session to send the crowd of 18,007 into a frenzy and knot the series at three games apiece. The victory marked Colorado's fourth consecutive home win in the series and sets up a winner-take-all showdown back in Dallas on Sunday night.

Watch the highlights:

Colorado came out firing in the first period, outshooting Dallas 14-6 and grabbing the lead on Cale Makar's power-play goal at the 9:42 mark. Makar, the Avalanche's star defenseman, wired a one-timer from the top of the crease that beat Oettinger glove side, demonstrating the kind of offensive brilliance that has made him one of the league's most complete blue-liners. The Stars answered before intermission though, with Roope Hintz deflecting a Miro Heiskanen shot past Alexandar Georgiev to deadlock the score at 1-1, showcasing the opportunistic finishing that has defined Dallas's playoff run.

The second period belonged to Dallas. Jason Robertson broke the tie with his sixth goal of the playoffs, cashing in on a 2-on-1 rush created by a beautiful stretch pass from Wyatt Johnston. Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon, who had been held quiet through two periods, drew a holding penalty late in the frame to give his team life. MacKinnon then set up Mikko Rantanen for a tap-in finish on the ensuing power play, pulling the Avalanche even at 2-2 and setting the stage for a wild finish.

Georgiev was stellar in the Colorado net, stopping 34 of 36 shots including several clutch saves in the third period to force overtime. Oettinger finished with 28 saves but was beaten on the decisive rebound play. The Avalanche finished 2-for-4 on the power play while Dallas went 0-for-3 with the man advantage, a discrepancy that proved decisive in a game decided by a single goal.

Game 7 is scheduled for Sunday night at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The winner will advance to face either the Winnipeg Jets or Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final. Nichushkin expressed his team's determination, noting that the group refuses to accept going home now and is fully focused on delivering their best performance when it matters most.
