Max Verstappen Tops Final Day of Bahrain F1 Testing as Red Bull Shows Ominous Form
Max Verstappen sent an ominous message to his Formula 1 rivals on Monday, topping the timesheets on the final day of pre-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit with a blistering lap of 1:28.645, while Red Bull Racing completed 142 trouble-free laps to demonstrate the reliability and pace that could define their 2026 championship defense.
The three-time world champion was in commanding form throughout the eight-hour session, consistently posting competitive times while also completing extensive race simulation runs that suggested Red Bull has lost none of their dominant form from the previous season. Verstappen's fastest lap came during the afternoon session and was three-tenths quicker than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in second place.
"The car feels really good," Verstappen said after stepping out of the RB20. "We've made some nice improvements from last year, and the balance is very predictable, which is exactly what you want heading into the season. Of course, testing times don't mean everything, but the car feels strong and we've had no reliability issues, which is crucial. I'm excited for Bahrain next week."
Mercedes showed encouraging signs of progress with Lewis Hamilton posting the third-fastest time, just four-tenths behind Verstappen's benchmark. The eight-time constructors' champions completed 127 laps without major incident, suggesting they may have solved the correlation issues that plagued their 2025 campaign and prevented them from challenging for victories.
Ferrari's Leclerc impressed with consistent pace throughout both morning and afternoon sessions, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five with a lap that came on medium compound tires, suggesting the Woking-based team may have genuine pace to spare. Aston Martin and Alpine also showed competitive times, indicating a potentially closer midfield battle than in recent seasons.
The three days of testing have provided teams with valuable data as they prepare for the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on March 2nd. Verstappen's dominant showing, combined with Red Bull's exceptional reliability record, suggests the Austrian team may once again be the benchmark when the lights go out for the first race of the 2026 season. However, the competitive times posted by multiple teams hint at what could be the closest championship fight in years, promising an exciting campaign ahead for Formula 1 fans worldwide.
