George Russell Sets Pace on Day Two of Bahrain F1 Testing as Mercedes Shows Promise
British driver tops timing sheets with 1:28.901 lap as Silver Arrows demonstrate improved reliability and speed.

George Russell delivered an encouraging performance for Mercedes on Tuesday, setting the fastest time of 1:28.901 during the second day of Formula 1 pre-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit, suggesting the Silver Arrows may have found solutions to their recent struggles.

The British driver completed 98 laps in the upgraded W16, demonstrating both impressive pace and reliability as Mercedes continues their development push following a disappointing 2025 campaign. Russell's benchmark time came in the afternoon session and was three-tenths faster than Red Bull's Max Verstappen in second place.

"The car feels much more predictable than last year," Russell said after stepping out of the Mercedes cockpit. "We've made significant changes to the suspension and aerodynamic package, and you can feel the improvements in balance and downforce. It's still early days, but the signs are very positive for the season ahead."

Mercedes' improved showing comes as welcome relief for the team and their supporters, who endured a winless 2025 season and watched their championship rivals pull further ahead. The W16's consistent lap times and trouble-free running suggest the team's winter development program may have addressed their fundamental issues.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished third fastest with Carlos Sainz fourth, while McLaren's Lando Norris rounded out the top five. Verstappen's Red Bull appeared to focus more on race simulation and setup work rather than outright pace, suggesting they remain confident in their package ahead of the season opener.

The promising test results provide genuine optimism that Mercedes could return to competitiveness after their recent struggles. Russell's pace, combined with Lewis Hamilton's positive feedback from Monday's running, indicates that the eight-time constructors' champions may once again be capable of challenging for victories. With three days of testing remaining before the Bahrain Grand Prix, Mercedes appears to have rediscovered the formula that made them so dominant in previous seasons.
