Sabalenka Survives Mboko Challenge to Advance at Indian Wells, Zverev Makes History
World number one Aryna Sabalenka weathered a spirited challenge from 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko to secure her spot in the Indian Wells semifinals with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-0) 6-4 victory on Thursday.
The two-time Australian Open champion found herself tested early by the fearless teenager, who pushed the opening set to a tiebreak before Sabalenka asserted her dominance. After claiming the first set convincingly in the breaker, the Belarusian finally broke through Mboko's stubborn resistance in the fifth game of the second set to close out the match.
Following the victory, Sabalenka was effusive in her praise for her young opponent, declaring Mboko a future champion. "A future star, a future Grand Slam champion, no doubt about that," Sabalenka said. "It's incredible to see these young girls these days, how brave they are. They go out there, they go after their shots, they're aggressive, they're fighting."
The victory sets up a semifinal clash with 14th seed Linda Noskova, who ended Australian qualifier Talia Gibson's remarkable run with a 6-2 4-6 6-2 triumph. Gibson, ranked 112th in the world, had become the first qualifier in 11 years to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals when she stunned seventh seed Jasmine Paolini earlier in the week.
For Sabalenka, who has been a runner-up at Indian Wells twice before, the tournament represents another opportunity to capture her first WTA 1000 title at the prestigious California venue. Her commanding performance in the tiebreak and crucial break in the second set demonstrated the mental fortitude that has made her one of the sport's elite competitors.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, Alexander Zverev achieved a milestone that places him among tennis royalty. The German fourth seed secured a commanding 6-2 6-3 victory over Frenchman Arthur Fils to reach his first Indian Wells semifinal, becoming just the fifth player in history to reach the semifinals of all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
With this achievement, Zverev joins the exclusive company of tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray – collectively known as the "Big Four" who dominated men's tennis for nearly two decades.
"It's very special to be one of five players in history to ever do it," Zverev reflected. "For sure, yeah, it's something that I'm very proud of."
The 27-year-old German has captured titles at five different Masters 1000 events but still seeks his elusive first Grand Slam title despite reaching three major finals. His semifinal opponent will be world number two Jannik Sinner, who advanced with a dominant 6-1 6-2 victory over American Learner Tien in just 66 minutes.
Zverev faces the additional challenge of a five-match losing streak against the reigning Wimbledon champion, adding extra intrigue to their upcoming semifinal encounter.
The other men's semifinal features world number one Carlos Alcaraz against Daniil Medvedev, setting up compelling matchups as the tournament reaches its climactic stages.
