Eddie Olczyk

Edward Walter Olczyk Jr. carved out a remarkable dual career in hockey, first as a productive NHL player and later as one of broadcasting's most beloved voices. Born in Chicago in 1966 to a Polish-American family, Olczyk's hockey journey began in the suburbs of Chicago, where his talent quickly elevated him through youth hockey ranks and into the national spotlight.

Olczyk's amateur career peaked at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, where he represented the United States at age 17, becoming one of the youngest players to compete for Team USA. His Olympic experience came just months before the NHL Draft, where his hometown Chicago Blackhawks selected him third overall, fulfilling a childhood dream. Making his NHL debut in the same year he graduated high school, Olczyk immediately demonstrated the skill and hockey sense that made him a first-round pick.

Over his 16-year NHL career, Olczyk played for six different teams—Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins. His work with NBC Sports as a color commentator on national NHL broadcasts, including multiple Stanley Cup Finals, earned him Emmy nominations and widespread acclaim. His enthusiasm, expertise, and ability to explain complex plays to casual fans while satisfying hardcore hockey enthusiasts made him the gold standard for hockey broadcasting.

His partnership with play-by-play announcer Mike "Doc" Emrick became legendary in hockey broadcasting circles, with their chemistry and professionalism elevating every broadcast. Later, his work alongside Kenny Albert and other broadcast partners maintained those high standards, making him a fixture of American hockey coverage for over two decades.

Olczyk's long tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks organization as a television analyst brought him full circle to his hockey roots. For 16 years, he called Blackhawks games, building deep connections with Chicago fans while documenting the franchise's resurgence and three Stanley Cup championships from 2010 to 2015. His departure to join the Seattle Kraken broadcast team in 2022 marked the end of an era for Chicago hockey fans.

Beyond hockey, Olczyk's public battle with colon cancer in 2017 inspired many. His openness about his diagnosis, treatment, and recovery raised awareness about early detection while demonstrating the resilience that defined his playing career. His emotional return to broadcasting after beating cancer remains one of hockey's most memorable moments.
