Fred VanVleet

Fred VanVleet was born on February 25, 1994, in Rockford, Illinois, where he learned the fundamentals of basketball from his father, Fred VanVleet Sr., a former college player. Growing up in a basketball family, VanVleet developed an exceptional work ethic and basketball IQ that would compensate for his lack of ideal size for professional basketball.

VanVleet attended Auburn High School in Rockford, where he led his team to multiple conference championships while establishing himself as one of Illinois' top point guard prospects. Despite his success, major college programs overlooked him due to his 6'0" frame, leading him to commit to Wichita State University.

At Wichita State, VanVleet became one of college basketball's most accomplished point guards under coach Gregg Marshall. He helped lead the Shockers to the Final Four in 2013 and an undefeated regular season in 2014. VanVleet's college career culminated with him becoming the program's all-time leader in assists and three-point field goals made, earning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year honors.

Despite his college success, VanVleet went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, a slight that would fuel his professional career. He signed with the Toronto Raptors as an undrafted free agent, beginning his journey from the NBA G League to eventual stardom. His relentless work ethic and clutch performances gradually earned him more playing time and respect.

VanVleet's breakthrough came during Toronto's 2019 NBA championship run, where he provided crucial scoring and leadership off the bench, particularly in the NBA Finals against Golden State. His fearless three-point shooting and defensive intensity helped the Raptors capture their first championship, with VanVleet becoming the first undrafted player to score 20+ points in multiple Finals games.

Following the championship, VanVleet emerged as Toronto's primary point guard and leader. He earned his first All-Star selection in 2022 and became known for his clutch shooting, defensive tenacity, and leadership qualities. In 2023, he signed with the Houston Rockets, bringing veteran leadership to a young, developing team.
