Zigiotti Olme seals Manchester United win over Liverpool in landmark 250th game
Julia Zigiotti Olme's early goal gave Manchester United a 1-0 WSL victory over Liverpool. Phallon Tullis-Joyce helped preserve the lead as United marked their 250th match with three points.

Manchester United marked their 250th competitive match with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Women's Super League on Saturday, October 3. Julia Zigiotti Olme scored after six minutes at Progress with Unity Stadium, while goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce helped secure the result. BBC Sport reported that it was United's second successive league win.

Watch the highlights:

The decisive moment came when Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating tried to find Kirsty Maclean with a pass. Zigiotti Olme intercepted and lifted her finish over Keating. Liverpool's official match report described an immediate response from the visitors, with Alice Bergstrom providing a route forward down the right as they sought an equaliser.

Tullis-Joyce stopped Cornelia Kapocs and Beata Olsson in rapid succession to keep United ahead. The hosts also threatened to extend their advantage: Jess Park struck the crossbar and Keating saved Andrea Medina's follow-up. BBC Sport reported that Keating later denied a curling effort from Elisabeth Terland, leaving the game separated by its early goal.

Liverpool continued to create openings after the interval. According to the club's report, Maclean released Alejandra Bernabe for an effort that Tullis-Joyce saved, while Hanna Lundkvist intercepted a low Bergstrom cross intended for Olsson. With about 20 minutes remaining, Jenna Clark could not connect cleanly with a header from Marie Hobinger's corner.

Gareth Taylor introduced Mao Itamura for her Liverpool debut during the second half. She combined with Hobinger, but the resulting attempt was saved as United resisted the visitors' late pressure. Liverpool confirmed that their next WSL fixture is away to Aston Villa on October 18, after the international break, with seven points collected from their first five matches.

The victory moved Eva Olid's United into sixth place, level with fifth-placed Liverpool on seven points but behind on goal difference. BBC Sport recorded eight saves by Tullis-Joyce and described the result as United's first clean sheet in all competitions this season. The outcome also echoed the team's first match following their 2018 reformation, which likewise ended in a 1-0 win over Liverpool.
