Zheng Qinwen Rallies From 5-0 Down to Knock Swiatek Out of US Open

Zheng Qinwen recovered from a 5-0 deficit in the opening set to defeat Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3 and reach the US Open quarter-finals. BBC Sport reported that the Chinese player won 13 of the final 16 games on Arthur Ashe Stadium, eliminating the Polish eighth seed and former tournament champion.

The turnaround continued an extraordinary sequence for Zheng, who also faced a 5-0 deficit in her previous match. The 23-year-old trailed Madison Keys by that margin in the deciding set of their third-round contest on Saturday, then reeled off seven consecutive games to advance to the fourth round. Against Swiatek, she again responded by winning seven straight games to take the first set.

Zheng maintained that momentum in the second set. The players stayed on serve through the first six games before Zheng hit a backhand return winner to claim the decisive break in the seventh. She broke Swiatek again two games later, completing the match in straight sets and matching her best previous performance at the US Open.

The win was Zheng's seventh in succession in New York. She entered the main draw through qualifying and has now won three qualifying matches and four main-draw contests. According to BBC Sport, the run will take her back close to the world's top 50 after she had fallen outside the top 100 earlier in 2026.

Zheng is the reigning Olympic champion and has previously reached world number four. BBC Sport reported that she had been working to recover her best form following elbow surgery in July 2025. After the victory, Zheng said playing more matches had helped her find rhythm, adding that she felt energised rather than tired when she arrived for the match.

Her quarter-final opponent will be the winner of the match between Naomi Osaka and Elena Rybakina. Elsewhere in the women's draw, French Open champion Mirra Andreeva came back after losing the opening set against Austria's Anastasia Potapova, reaching the US Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career.
