Zak Crawley’s unbeaten 82 puts Kent in control at Northamptonshire

Zak Crawley struck an unbeaten 82 as Kent reached 154 without loss on a rain-shortened opening day of their County Championship Division Two match against Northamptonshire. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters’ Network, said Crawley and Ben Compton batted through the 36 overs possible at Wantage Road after Kent were asked to bat.

Crawley hit 12 fours and one six in his highest Championship score of the season, while Compton finished 51 not out. Their unbroken opening partnership gave Kent a strong start in a match with clear promotion significance: Kent began the contest second in the table, with third-placed Northamptonshire only four points behind.

Morning rain delayed the start until 4:15 p.m. Northamptonshire seamer Ben Sanderson found early movement and repeatedly challenged Crawley, who survived an lbw appeal on 16. Compton was also given a reprieve on 17 when Nathan McSweeney dropped a low chance at fourth slip from Sanderson’s bowling.

Crawley nevertheless kept the scoreboard moving. He found early boundaries off Liam Guthrie, reached his half-century from 74 balls and later drove Sanderson for three fours through the covers during the bowler’s second spell. His only six came against leg-spinner Yuzi Chahal, whom he struck into the upper tier of the Spencer Pavilion after another unsuccessful lbw appeal.

Compton took a more measured route, punishing loose deliveries while negotiating testing spells. He survived further pressure late in the day, including an appeal from Calvin Harrison when he was on 44. Replays cited by the BBC report indicated that delivery struck him outside the line. He completed his half-century from 108 balls in the final over despite two more strong appeals from Harrison.

Northamptonshire did not bat before stumps, leaving Kent’s openers together and the home attack without a wicket. With much of the first day lost to the weather, Crawley and Compton used the available session to establish an imposing platform in a match between two teams separated by a narrow margin in the promotion race.
