Zaib keeps Northants fighting as Middlesex threaten promotion hopes

Northamptonshire ended day two of their final County Championship match with a 97-run lead over Middlesex, but only three second-innings wickets remaining at Lord's. Saif Zaib was unbeaten on 83 as the visitors reached 249-7, keeping them in the contest while their Division Two promotion prospects remained under threat, according to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport.

Ricardo Vasconcelos contributed 69 alongside Zaib's resistance, giving Northamptonshire a chance to recover from a first-innings total of 103. Middlesex had made 255, with Ryan Higgins scoring 115 and Ben Sanderson taking 4-68. The visitors therefore needed to erase a sizeable deficit before they could begin setting a target, and Middlesex still held the stronger position at the close.

Conditions had changed markedly after 20 wickets fell on the opening day. The surface offered less to the seamers, although there was some slow turn for the spinners. Vasconcelos and Luke Procter negotiated a wicketless morning against disciplined bowling, but Danru Ferns removed Procter with the second ball after lunch to give Middlesex their first breakthrough of the day.

Zafar Gohar then helped Middlesex regain control, finishing with 3-57. He had Lewis McManus caught at slip by Tom Helm and dismissed Gus Miller lbw. Vasconcelos went on to pass fifty before Ferns trapped him lbw with a yorker. After tea, Gohar dismissed Sales with a catch taken by Sam Robson at slip, leaving Northamptonshire's lead at just 17 runs at that stage.

Zaib survived an important chance on 25 when Ben Geddes dropped him at deep square leg off Ferns. He made the reprieve count, reaching his half-century and later hitting Toby Roland-Jones for six with the new ball. Calvin Harrison stayed with him for more than an hour in a partnership of 51 before Helm struck twice in one over. Sanderson then remained alongside Zaib until stumps.

Northamptonshire's position in the promotion race depended on more than their own recovery. The report said Kent were well placed to beat Gloucestershire at Canterbury and secure second place, leaving Northants facing the possibility that even a victory would not be enough. With their own match still unfinished, Zaib's immediate task was to extend a lead that remained below three figures heading into day three.
