Zaib keeps Northants fighting as Middlesex hold advantage at Lord's

Northamptonshire ended day two at Lord's with a 97-run lead and three second-innings wickets remaining as Middlesex maintained the advantage in their County Championship Division Two match. The visitors reached 249-7 after 96 overs, with Saif Zaib unbeaten on 83 and Ben Sanderson on 18, according to Cricbuzz's close-of-play scorecard.

The second-innings recovery followed a difficult opening day for Northamptonshire, who had been dismissed for 103 before Middlesex made 255. That left a first-innings deficit of 152. By Friday's close, the visitors had moved ahead but still needed their remaining batters to extend a lead that was short of three figures.

Zaib's innings kept Northamptonshire in contention. Cricbuzz recorded his 83 from 138 deliveries, including seven fours and a six, while Sanderson had faced 26 balls for his 18. Their unbroken partnership stood at 29 from 49 deliveries. Northamptonshire had added 31 runs for the loss of two wickets across the final 10 overs of the day.

The ECB Reporters' Network account carried by BBC Sport described a slower surface than on day one, when 20 wickets fell. Ricardo Vasconcelos made 69 as Northamptonshire resisted through a wicketless morning. Middlesex broke through immediately after lunch when Danru Ferns dismissed Luke Procter, and spinner Zafar Gohar subsequently removed Lewis McManus and Gus Miller as the hosts regained control.

Zaib survived a chance on 25 when Ben Geddes dropped him off Ferns at deep square leg, according to the report. Ferns later trapped Vasconcelos lbw, while Gohar had James Sales caught by Sam Robson. Calvin Harrison helped Zaib add 51 before becoming one of two victims in a Tom Helm over. Gohar finished the day with figures of 3-57.

Northamptonshire's promotion prospects also depended on events elsewhere. BBC Sport's report said Kent were well placed against Gloucestershire at Canterbury in the race for second place. Neither that promotion outcome nor the Lord's result was settled in the day-two account, with Zaib and Sanderson still giving the visitors an opportunity to build a more demanding target.
