Zaib keeps Northants alive at Lord's as Kent strengthen promotion position

Northamptonshire ended day two at Lord's on 249-7 in their second innings, leading Middlesex by 97 runs as their promotion challenge came under increasing pressure. Saif Zaib was unbeaten on 83, according to the ECB Reporters' Network account published by BBC Sport, keeping the visitors in the match alongside Ben Sanderson.

Ricardo Vasconcelos contributed 69 after Northamptonshire had managed only 103 in their first innings. Middlesex's reply of 255 included 115 from Ryan Higgins. Zafar Gohar took 3-57 in the second innings, while Tom Helm's two wickets with the new ball left the hosts in control at the close.

Zaib survived a dropped catch on 25 and shared a stand of 51 with Calvin Harrison, who resisted for more than an hour. Helm then struck twice in an over, before Sanderson stayed with Zaib until stumps. Northamptonshire had avoided defeat for another day, but still had only three wickets available to increase their lead.

Their promotion rivals Kent, meanwhile, finished Friday in a stronger position against Gloucestershire at Canterbury. Kent's official match report, also supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, said Ben Compton's 126 helped them reach 353 and establish a first-innings advantage of 124. Captain Daniel Bell-Drummond contributed 55, while JT Langridge returned 3-105 for the visitors.

Matt Milnes then removed Joe Phillips with the first ball of Gloucestershire's second innings and bowled Ollie Price for nine. Those dismissals reduced Gloucestershire to 13-2, before Tom Boorman and Miles Hammond took them to 61-2 at stumps. Boorman remained unbeaten on 11 and Hammond on 33, leaving the visitors 63 runs behind with eight wickets remaining.

Kent's report stated that victory would guarantee promotion, although their match was still unfinished. Compton had entered the innings without reaching double figures in his previous six attempts. He reached three figures by clipping Langridge for four. His century changed that run and put Kent ahead, but Gloucestershire's unbeaten pair ensured the home side still had work to do when play resumed.
