Zaib Century Puts Northamptonshire in Command at New Road

Northamptonshire took control of their County Championship Division Two match against Worcestershire after Saif Zaib's 110 and a late three-wicket spell from Harry Conway shaped day two at New Road. Worcestershire closed on 55 for three in their second innings, still 34 runs behind the visitors.

BBC Sport, carrying a report supported by the ECB Reporters' Network, said Northamptonshire made 289 in response to Worcestershire's first-innings total of 200. The visitors therefore secured an 89-run advantage before Conway struck three times in the final 24 overs of the day and finished with figures of three for 19.

Northamptonshire had encountered early setbacks. Tom Taylor trapped Ricardo Vasconcelos lbw for 13 with the third ball of the morning, while Calvin Harrison made 24 before falling to Adam Finch. Captain Luke Procter was dismissed for 21 after facing 72 deliveries, and George Bartlett's departure left the visitors 106 for four at lunch.

Zaib then shifted the balance alongside James Sales. He reached his half-century from 66 balls and continued to attack, completing his second County Championship hundred of the season from 137 deliveries with his 14th four. Sales contributed a measured 52 from 82 balls as the pair added 133 and carried Northamptonshire beyond Worcestershire's total.

Worcestershire fought back during the evening session. Matthew Waite removed Zaib, caught in the deep by Dan Lategan, and dismissed Louis Kimber for a second-ball duck in the space of three deliveries. Lewis McManus added 30 late in the innings, but Ben Allison finished Northamptonshire's effort. Waite returned three for 31 and Allison took three for 44.

Conway quickly strengthened Northamptonshire's position with the ball. He dismissed Lategan before Zaib caught Rehaan Edavalath at midwicket, then removed first-innings half-centurion Jake Libby for 12. Conway later hit the top of Adam Hose's off stump without dislodging a bail, denying him a fourth wicket before bad light stopped play at 6:50pm. Promotion-chasing Northamptonshire ended the day with four match points to Worcestershire's three and a clear opportunity to press for victory.
