Yorkshire Make 173 Then Reduce Hampshire to 60-4 in Relegation Battle
Yorkshire fought back with the ball after being dismissed for 173 on the opening day of their County Championship Division One match against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl. Hampshire closed on 60-4, trailing by 113 runs, as a contest with direct implications for the relegation battle shifted sharply during the final session.
Watch the highlights:
BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters' Network, said Kyle Abbott led Hampshire's attack with figures of 4-17 from 18 overs. The South African conceded only three runs and delivered seven maidens in his opening nine-over spell, dismissing Will Luxton lbw and having Sam Whiteman caught behind. He later removed Matthew Revis and Jonny Bairstow, both lbw.
Andrew Neal supplied three wickets in only his second County Championship appearance. The left-arm spinner dismissed James Wharton, George Hill and debutant Jafer Chohan, giving him his first three wickets in the competition. Eddie Jack took two wickets, including Adam Lyth with his fourth delivery, before Sonny Baker ended the innings by removing Ben Cliff.
Yorkshire found two important partnerships amid the collapse. Revis and Wharton added 55 to steady the innings, while Dom Bess and Cliff put on 53 for the final wicket. Bess finished unbeaten on 40 and struck the first boundary conceded by Abbott, doing so from the seamer's 95th delivery of the day.
Hampshire then lost four wickets in the 26 overs available for their reply after six overs had been lost to brief rain interruptions. Ben Coad made the initial breakthrough by dismissing Ali Orr, with Jonny Bairstow completing the catch while standing up to the stumps. Hill then returned 3-4 from eight overs, including four maidens, as he bowled Toby Albert and trapped Jake Lehmann and Baker lbw. Nick Gubbins remained unbeaten on 30 at the close.
The result of the match could prove significant at the bottom of Division One. Hampshire began the fixture 17 points ahead of Yorkshire, with the two clubs on opposite sides of the relegation line. Hampshire collected three points and Yorkshire one from the first day, but neither side established control after the wickets fell in both innings.
