Yates Century Puts Warwickshire in Command Against Hampshire

Rob Yates scored his first County Championship century of the season as Warwickshire took firm control against Hampshire on day two at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton. Yates made 109 and shared a 148-run second-wicket partnership with Dan Mousley. Resuming after rain had limited the opening day to 41 overs, Warwickshire built from 141-1. Mousley was dismissed by Kyle Abbott, edging to third slip and giving the Hampshire seamer his 50th wicket of the season.

Yates, who had registered five Championship half-centuries this season without converting one into a hundred, reached three figures just before lunch. Beginning the final over of the session on 98, he regained the strike from Sam Hain and found the cover gap for his 12th first-class century. Andrew Neal later ended the innings when a low delivery dislodged Yates.

Hain kept Warwickshire moving with 90, though he was dropped twice before Neal finally had him caught by Toby Albert. Kai Smith added a half-century, while Abbott finished with 4-51. Neal, James Fuller and Abbott combined to close out the innings, with Warwickshire dismissed for 398.

Hampshire then lost six wickets in 23 overs. Ali Orr was trapped leg before, Nick Gubbins was bowled attempting a reverse sweep and Jake Lehmann edged Chris Woakes to first slip. Ben Mayes, Eddie Jack and Albert followed in successive overs as Warwickshire’s attack tightened its grip.

Olly Hannon-Dalby finished the day with 2-7, while Indian spinner Manav Suthar also claimed two wickets. Albert was Hampshire’s leading scorer at the close with 24. The hosts collected two points to Warwickshire’s three but face a steep task when play resumes, while the visitors have an opportunity to strengthen their County Championship title challenge.
