Yang seals Celtic comeback as perfect Premiership start continues

Celtic maintained their perfect Scottish Premiership start with a 2-1 comeback victory at St Mirren, as Yang Hyun-jun scored the decisive goal in Paisley. The result gave the defending champions five wins from five league matches and handed St Mirren their first Premiership defeat of the season.

According to reporting by the Press Association, carried by The Guardian, St Mirren took the lead midway through the first half through a Nikolas Agrafiotis penalty. The spot kick followed a handball by Celtic defender Liam Scales, and the hosts remained in front through the interval after an energetic display.

Scales responded six minutes after halftime by heading Celtic level. Yang then completed the turnaround midway through the second half, finishing a counterattack that followed strong pressing from Camilo Duran. St Mirren continued to make the champions work and finished the match with 19 attempts on goal, but Celtic protected their advantage.

Yang's contribution came before a spell away from the club. Manager Martin O'Neill said the 24-year-old will travel to Japan for the Asian Games, ruling him out of Celtic's midweek visit to St Johnstone, two matches against Rangers and the Europa League opener against Ferencvaros. O'Neill praised Yang's form and his willingness to work defensively after the winning goal.

Rangers also collected three points, beating Motherwell 1-0 at Ibrox through Ryan Naderi's 12th-minute goal. Naderi had replaced Lawrence Shankland in the eighth minute after the Rangers captain suffered a hamstring injury. He then dispossessed goalkeeper Alex Paulsen outside the penalty area and rolled the ball into an unguarded net. Kim Min-su later missed a first-half penalty, while Rangers passed up further opportunities despite Motherwell having more possession and creating several chances.

Rangers manager Derek McInnes said Shankland would undergo a scan on Monday and noted that the striker described the problem as feeling similar to a hamstring injury that kept him out for two months earlier in 2026. Elsewhere, Michael Forbes scored in added time to earn Dundee United a 1-1 draw with Falkirk, while 10-man Kilmarnock held Aberdeen to a goalless draw for their first point of the league season.
