Yamal double helps Barcelona beat Levante and match club winning-start record
Barcelona maintained their perfect La Liga start with a 4–2 win at Levante on Sunday, with Lamine Yamal scoring twice and Karim Adeyemi adding the final goal. Cadena SER reported that the result left Hansi Flick's side with five wins from five league matches and still top of the table.
Watch the highlights:
Xavi Espart opened the scoring after five minutes, driving a low shot past Mathew Ryan for his first competitive Barcelona goal. According to the club's match report, Yamal doubled the lead in the 19th minute after a move involving Pau Cubarsí, Fermín López and Raphinha, who supplied the final pass.
Yamal added his second from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half after Mandi brought him down inside the area. The forward sent Ryan the wrong way to establish a three-goal advantage. Barcelona then made changes, but Levante's response prevented the visitors from seeing out a straightforward finish.
Iván Romero capitalised on a misplaced Espart pass in the 79th minute, rounding Joan Garcia to score. Brugué converted a rebound in the 88th to reduce the deficit to one. Adeyemi eventually settled the contest in stoppage time, running from halfway and beating Mandi before finishing, the Barcelona report said.
The victory also extended Barcelona's winning start across all competitions to six matches. In a separate historical review, the club said the sequence comprised a Champions League victory over Feyenoord and league wins against Elche, Athletic Club, Rayo, Valencia and Levante. That puts Flick's team alongside three earlier Barcelona sides that also won their opening six competitive fixtures of a season.
Those previous runs came in 1929/30 under James Bellamy, 1960/61 under Ljubiša Broćić and 2018/19 under Ernesto Valverde, according to the club's review. None reached seven consecutive opening wins: Bellamy's side drew with Athletic Club, Broćić's lost to Atlético Madrid and Valverde's drew with Girona. Barcelona's next scheduled opponent is Racing Santander at Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday, when another victory would establish a new club mark.
