Xavi Sets Out Attacking Vision as Netherlands Coach

Xavi Hernández has set out an attacking, possession-based vision for the Netherlands after being presented as the national team’s new head coach. The Guardian reported from his presentation at the Dutch football federation’s campus in Zeist on Tuesday, where the former Barcelona player and coach discussed his tactical priorities, selection policy and the process that led to his appointment.

The 46-year-old said he wants the Netherlands to take the initiative with the ball and play with passion, desire and ambition. He identified 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3 as possible formations, explaining that he views those systems as ways to exert greater control. His comments indicated that an assertive playing identity, rather than a fixed formation, will guide the team.

Xavi linked that approach to the Dutch influence on his own football education at Barcelona. The club’s methods were shaped by figures including Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, while Xavi made his first-team debut under Louis van Gaal and later played for Frank Rijkaard. He also recalled watching the Netherlands as a child and said the country’s traditional style matches the football he wants his team to produce.

The new coach has already spoken with midfielder Frenkie de Jong, whom he managed at Barcelona, and captain Virgil van Dijk. According to The Guardian, Xavi plans another conversation with Van Dijk to discuss the defender’s ambitions for the national side. Xavi also made clear that players in the Saudi Pro League will remain eligible, saying performances will matter more than the competition in which a candidate plays.

Nigel de Jong, the KNVB’s director of elite football, described a wider search before Xavi was chosen. De Jong said Pep Guardiola was approached but did not want a job in the near future, while Arne Slot opted to remain in club management after two meetings. The federation also considered Netherlands under-21 coach Michael Reiziger before announcing Xavi’s appointment on August 12.

Xavi’s first match in charge is scheduled to be a Nations League game against Germany in Amsterdam on September 24. Germany will also have a new coach in Jürgen Klopp. Xavi will begin that assignment with a staff that includes Ruud van Nistelrooy and with a clearly stated goal: restoring a proactive Dutch style while building a team capable of competing for victories.
