Xavi sets attacking blueprint after taking Netherlands job

Xavi Hernandez has outlined an attacking, possession-led vision for the Netherlands after being presented as the national team's new head coach. The Guardian reported that the 46-year-old described the appointment as a chance to enter the country's "university of football," reflecting the Dutch influence that shaped his career at Barcelona.

The former Barcelona midfielder said he wants his team to take the initiative with the ball while playing with passion, ambition and desire. Asked about tactical systems, Xavi pointed to formations including 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3, all designed to help the Netherlands control matches. He indicated that a five-defender setup is not his preferred approach.

Xavi's connection to Dutch football runs through his years at Barcelona. He emerged from La Masia, whose playing principles were heavily influenced by Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, and made his first-team debut under Louis van Gaal. He later played for Frank Rijkaard and became a central figure in Pep Guardiola's Barcelona side.

The new coach has already spoken with Frenkie de Jong, whom he managed at Barcelona, and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk. Xavi said another conversation with Van Dijk is planned so he can learn more about the defender's ambitions for the national team. He also made clear that selection will depend on performance rather than the league in which a player competes, leaving the door open to players based in Saudi Arabia.

According to The Guardian, Dutch federation elite football director Nigel de Jong first explored Pep Guardiola's availability and later held meetings with Arne Slot, who chose to remain in club football. Xavi then met De Jong and supervisory board member Clarence Seedorf in Amsterdam. Netherlands under-21 coach Michael Reiziger was also considered before the KNVB announced Xavi's appointment on August 12.

Xavi's first match in charge will be a Nations League fixture against Germany in Amsterdam on September 24. Germany will also have a new coach in Jurgen Klopp. Xavi said he is excited by the challenge and wants his side to reproduce the attacking Dutch football he remembers watching as a child.
