Xavi Sets Attacking Blueprint in First Netherlands Presentation

Xavi Hernandez has set out an attacking vision for the Netherlands after being presented as the national team's new head coach. The Guardian reported from Zeist that the 46-year-old described the role as a major honour and emphasized his longstanding connection to Dutch football through Barcelona's playing tradition and the influence of Johan Cruyff.

The former Barcelona midfielder and coach said his Netherlands side should seek to control matches through possession while showing ambition, passion and desire. He identified 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3 as possible systems, all designed to help the team take the initiative rather than default to a five-defender setup.

Xavi's links with Dutch football stretch across his career. He developed at Barcelona's La Masia academy, made his first-team debut under Louis van Gaal and later played under Frank Rijkaard. The Guardian also noted that Cruyff's ideas shaped Barcelona's identity and influenced Pep Guardiola, under whom Xavi became a central figure in one of the club's most successful teams.

The new coach has already spoken with Frenkie de Jong, whom he managed at Barcelona, and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk. Xavi said he planned another conversation with Van Dijk to discuss the defender's ambitions for the national side. He also made clear that selection will depend on individual performance rather than the league in which a player competes, leaving the door open to Dutch players based in Saudi Arabia.

Nigel de Jong, the Dutch federation's director of elite football, described the recruitment process during the presentation. According to The Guardian, De Jong first approached Guardiola, who did not want to take a job in the near future, and then met Arne Slot, who chose to remain in club management. Xavi later met De Jong and supervisory board member Clarence Seedorf in Amsterdam before the KNVB announced his appointment on August 12.

Xavi's first match in charge is scheduled to be a Nations League meeting with Germany in Amsterdam on September 24. Germany will also have a new coach in Jurgen Klopp, giving the fixture an immediate point of interest. Xavi's staff includes former Netherlands striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, and the opening assignment will provide the first competitive look at the possession-focused approach outlined in Zeist.
