Wyndham Clark blocks out jeers to win second US Open
Wyndham Clark survived a hostile Shinnecock Hills crowd and a tightening final round to win his second US Open title, holding off Sam Burns by one shot.

Wyndham Clark held on at Shinnecock Hills to win the US Open for the second time, closing with a difficult final round in front of a crowd that was often against him. Reports from the final day described boos and jeers as Clark tried to protect a large lead, with New York spectators leaning heavily toward Scottie Scheffler and other challengers.

Clark had begun Sunday with a six-shot cushion, but the championship became much tighter as the round unfolded. He shot a three-over-par 73, while Sam Burns made a serious push with a closing 67 and finished just one stroke back. Tom Kim took third, while Scheffler could not build the putting run he needed to turn crowd support into a real title charge.

The decisive part of Clark’s victory was not dominance from tee to green; it was recovery. A rough front nine opened the door, but he steadied himself on the back nine and produced important birdies, including one at the 16th, to keep Burns from forcing a playoff. On a US Open setup, that kind of late composure often matters as much as the scorecard itself.

The win also reframes Clark’s past year. His previous US Open at Oakmont had ended with public criticism after he damaged historic lockers, and the reaction around Shinnecock showed that some fans had not forgotten. Clark’s ability to absorb that atmosphere and still close out a major gives this title a redemption angle as well as a sporting one.

For the wider golf picture, Clark is now more than a player who caught one major week perfectly. Two US Open titles in four years puts him in a different category, especially given the pressure and hostility that surrounded this one. The performance was messy, tense and uncomfortable, but it was also exactly the kind of result that major champions are remembered for.
