Wu Yize and Kyren Wilson Set for British Open Second-Round Clash

World champion Wu Yize will face former Crucible winner Kyren Wilson in the second round of the British Open after both players won their opening matches in Cheltenham. BBC Sport reported that the random-draw format brought the two major champions together at an early stage of the tournament.

Wu, currently ranked third in the world, came through an all-Chinese contest against Liu Hongyu by a 4-3 score. Wilson, the 2024 world champion, had a more comfortable start, defeating Austria’s Florian Nuessle 4-1 to secure his place in the next round.

A group of other established contenders also progressed. Defending British Open champion Shaun Murphy advanced alongside Ding Junhui, Barry Hawkins, Judd Trump and John Higgins, giving the second-round draw a strong collection of decorated players. The tournament has no seeded draw, so leading competitors can be paired against each other in any round.

The opening round also produced several prominent eliminations. Three-time world champion Mark Williams was beaten 4-0 by David Gilbert, while world number two Neil Robertson lost 4-1 to Pang Junxu. Luca Brecel, the 2023 world champion, was edged 4-3 by Chris Wakelin.

Mark Joyce entered the field as a replacement for Ronnie O’Sullivan after the seven-time world champion withdrew for medical reasons. Joyce then defeated Poland’s Mateusz Baranowski 4-1, turning the late opportunity into a place in the second round. New world number one Zhao Xintong was scheduled to begin his campaign against England’s Oliver Brown on Tuesday.
