WSL Investigates Crystal Palace Substitution Breach in Everton Win

The Women's Super League has opened an investigation after Crystal Palace used four substitution windows during Sunday's 1-0 victory over Everton. The league confirmed that Palace breached competition rules, which permit teams to make up to five changes but limit those changes to three separate opportunities during a match.

Palace introduced substitutes in the 62nd, 83rd, 90th and 97th minutes at the Borough Sports Ground. BBC Sport reported that the league will examine the incident with both clubs and refereeing body Pro Ref. Crystal Palace and Everton had been approached for comment at the time of that report.

The Athletic, in reporting carried by Yahoo Sports, said the match-official team has been stood down from the next round of WSL fixtures while the investigation proceeds. The fourth window came in stoppage time, when Kirsty Howat replaced Shannon O'Brien. Palace had already used three second-half windows before that change was allowed.

The issue emerged after Palace marked their return to the top division with a victory. Lexi Lloyd-Smith scored the game's only goal in the 34th minute, according to the official match data published by Sky Sports. The result gave the newly promoted side three points against Everton on the opening weekend of the league season.

No sanction has been announced. BBC Sport reported that WSL rules do not set an automatic punishment for this type of breach. The matter could be referred to an independent tribunal, whose available sanctions range from a warning or fine to a points deduction or another sporting penalty. That list describes the tribunal's powers rather than an indication of what Palace will receive.

The investigation will now have to establish how a fourth substitution opportunity was permitted and determine whether further disciplinary action is appropriate. Until the WSL completes that process, Palace's 1-0 result remains recorded and the possible consequences remain unresolved. The league said it would provide an update after conducting its investigation with Palace, Everton and Pro Ref.
