Wrexham Sign Joe Worrall From Burnley on Three-Year Deal

What happened: Wrexham have signed centre-back Joe Worrall from Championship rivals Burnley, adding an experienced defender before the summer transfer deadline. BBC Sport reported the completed move on Tuesday after the 29-year-old underwent a medical and agreed terms with the Welsh club.

The Guardian reported that Worrall signed a three-year contract after the clubs agreed a fee of £2 million. The transfer is permanent, ending his two-year spell at Turf Moor. Wrexham have moved to reinforce manager Phil Parkinson’s defensive options after beginning the 2026-27 campaign without a clean sheet.

Worrall started his senior career with boyhood club Nottingham Forest and made 226 appearances before leaving in 2024. He played a central role when Forest won promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs in 2022 and was selected in the division’s team of the season for the 2021-22 campaign.

The defender also had loan spells with Dagenham and Redbridge, Rangers and Besiktas. He won the Turkish Cup during his time in Istanbul in 2023-24, then joined Burnley permanently. BBC Sport reported that Worrall made 27 appearances in all competitions for Burnley and was capped by England at under-21 level.

Why it matters: Wrexham entered deadline day without a win in their first four matches across all competitions this season. Their latest Championship outing ended in a 2-1 home defeat by Birmingham City, after which Parkinson said his team had conceded two exceptionally soft goals. Worrall brings experience of both Championship promotion and Premier League football to a back line under early pressure.

Worrall had been an unused substitute in each of Burnley’s first three league matches under new head coach Nicky Hayen. His only appearance for the club this season came in an EFL Cup first-round win over Notts County on August 8. The move gives him a fresh opportunity for regular football while providing Wrexham with another established central-defensive option for their Championship campaign.
