Wrexham wins approval for 2,250 extra seats in new Kop Stand
Wrexham can expand its new Kop Stand to 7,750 seats after council approval. The redevelopment is expected to lift the Racecourse Ground capacity above 18,000.

Wrexham AFC have secured planning permission for up to 2,250 additional seats in the new Kop Stand, allowing its capacity to reach 7,750. Football Stadium Management reported that Wrexham County Borough Council's planning committee approved the application, with the completed redevelopment expected to take the Racecourse Ground's overall capacity beyond 18,000.

Watch the highlights:

The decision builds on permission for 5,500 seats granted on March 3, 2025. The application for the additional capacity was submitted on July 30 that year. The extra seats will occupy a second tier within the stand's existing approved footprint, rather than requiring an expansion of the development's physical boundaries.

Transport arrangements formed part of the submission. According to Football Stadium Management, the revised travel plan commits the club to promoting buses and trains through its communications channels and working with bus operators and Transport for Wales. Existing park-and-ride schemes will continue, alongside free matchday parking at Eagles Meadow. The increased seating is intended to serve demand from local supporters and visiting international fans.

The Stadium Business reported that Populous designed the Kop after being appointed in October 2024 to develop a stadium masterplan, initially concentrating on the stand. McLaren Construction Midlands and North was appointed in September 2025, with early works beginning the following month. Its report places completion of the full construction programme in summer 2027; planning approval does not mean the additional seats are already available.

The stadium project also follows a change in control of the ground. The Stadium Business reported that Wrexham reached an agreement with the Wrexham Supporters Trust to end the stadium's headlease and underlease in July. The club paid the Trust £187,000, matching the amount supporters contributed to help save Wrexham in 2011.

The redevelopment accompanies the club's rise since Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds acquired Wrexham in February 2021. Three consecutive promotions took the team from the National League to the Championship, where it finished seventh last season. Alongside accommodating more club supporters, Wrexham hopes the rebuilt stadium will support its ambition to stage international matches.
