Wrexham Kop expansion wins planning backing after parking scrutiny
Wrexham's plans to expand the capacity of the Kop stand under construction at the STōK Cae Ras have won planning committee backing, according to Place North West's October 6 report. The vote followed scrutiny of parking and noise, with no votes against and one abstention.
Watch the highlights:
The report said highways officers required a travel plan that would be implemented and monitored, with funding and a mechanism for further mitigation if its targets were missed. Forecast parking demand of about 3,580 vehicles exceeded the approved off-street supply of 3,325 spaces, leaving a projected shortfall of roughly 255.
The club's interim transport proposals include walking and cycling, public transport, park-and-ride options, coach travel and car-sharing. Councillors were presented with a route allowing delegated approval once conditions were satisfied. The planning decision therefore advances the larger-capacity scheme while leaving transport measures part of the process, rather than confirming that the stand is ready to open.
McLaren Construction, the project's main contractor, says it was appointed in September 2025 and moved into the main construction phase that December. Its published project account describes foundation work, reinforced concrete lift cores, drainage and preparations for the ground-floor slab. The work is being carried out within an operating stadium, requiring coordinated access and construction sequencing on a restricted site alongside ongoing football activity.
Construction has since reached a major structural stage. Design and Build UK reported on September 17 that a 125-tonne roof truss had been assembled from five sections and lifted into position. McLaren worked with steel specialist J&D Pierce on the operation. That update also reported completed upper-floor slabs and continuing installation of precast terrace units, alongside progress on internal building services.
The finished development is intended to restore stands on all four sides of the ground and lift overall capacity above 18,000. McLaren says the design includes better accessibility, new concourses and upgraded media and matchday facilities, with UEFA Category 4 compliance an objective. The September construction update targeted readiness for the 2027-28 season; that remains a project timetable, not confirmation of completion.
