Wrexham fined £75,000 over Kabore and O'Hare eligibility breaches
Wrexham have been fined £75,000 by the English Football League over two player-eligibility breaches involving summer signings Issa Kabore and Callum O'Hare. The club announced the sanction on Wednesday, with £25,000 of the total suspended, according to reporting by the Associated Press. The cases concerned separate Championship fixtures against Birmingham City and Millwall.
Watch the highlights:
Kabore appeared as a substitute against Birmingham on 28 August despite being ineligible. In its statement, reproduced by The Star, Wrexham said it possessed the correct right-to-work documents for the player but had failed to submit them properly to the EFL. The breach therefore concerned the submission of paperwork, rather than the club lacking the documents.
The second case involved O'Hare's inclusion in the squad for the Millwall match on 2 September. He had not been registered in time to qualify for that fixture, which took place the day after his arrival from Sheffield United. Unlike Kabore, O'Hare did not enter the game: he remained an unused substitute, AP reported.
BBC Sport reported that Wrexham lost 2-1 to Birmingham and won 3-0 at Millwall. The club said it had agreed a decision with the EFL covering both breaches and would take steps to prevent further problems. The sanction covers the two incidents together, with one-third of the financial penalty suspended.
Both players joined on three-year contracts during the summer, according to the BBC. Kabore, a 25-year-old Burkina Faso international, made his move from Manchester City permanent after spending the previous season on loan at Wrexham. He has made 10 Championship appearances this season. O'Hare signed after leaving Sheffield United.
BBC Sport Wales reported that Wrexham are understood to be improving administrative procedures and are thought to be recruiting a club secretary alongside staff training. A club official told the broadcaster that manager Phil Parkinson, his coaching staff and sporting director Steve Nickson were not responsible for the errors. Nickson's formal appointment came on 7 September. Wrexham were 17th in the Championship after 12 matches at the time of the report.
