Wrexham fined £75,000 over Kabore and O'Hare eligibility breaches
Wrexham have received a £75,000 fine from the English Football League over two player-eligibility breaches involving Issa Kabore and Callum O'Hare, BBC Sport reported. Of that total, £25,000 is suspended. The club confirmed it had agreed a decision with the league.
Watch the highlights:
Kabore appeared as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat by Birmingham City on 28 August despite a problem uploading his Home Office right-to-work documents. O'Hare was an unused substitute in the 3-0 victory at Millwall on 2 September after his paperwork missed the submission deadline.
BBC Sport reported that Wrexham are understood to be strengthening their administrative procedures, with improved staff training and the recruitment of a club secretary thought to be among the measures. The club said it was taking steps to prevent a repeat of the eligibility problems.
A club official told BBC Sport Wales that manager Phil Parkinson, his coaching staff and sporting director Steve Nickson were not responsible for the incidents. Nickson's appointment did not formally begin until 7 September. Wrexham were 17th in the Championship after 12 matches at the time of the report.
The EFL's published transfer guidance explains the checks that sit behind player registration. Clubs use an electronic system operated jointly with the Football Association and Premier League to supply the required paperwork. An application becomes available to the EFL and FA only after the club has completed all the necessary details and submitted it. Both organisations must check the documents and find them in order before registration is approved.
The same guidance says clubs must submit documents before noon on the day preceding a match. For the fixtures on Wednesday, 2 September, the EFL specifically identified noon on transfer deadline day as the cut-off. Applications arriving later that day, but before the transfer window closed, could still be processed; however, those players could not become eligible before Thursday, 3 September. Where paperwork needs amendments, the club must make the corrections and resubmit it.
