Four scorers lift Wrexham to 4-1 victory over Preston
Wrexham beat Preston North End 4-1 at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday, October 17, with four different scorers contributing to the Championship victory. Joe Worrall, Ben Whiteman, Sam Smith and Kieffer Moore scored for the hosts, while Alfie Devine supplied Preston's only goal.
Watch the highlights:
According to Sky Sports' match report, Preston threatened first: Worrall cleared Odel Offiah's effort off the line and Andrew Hughes headed wide. Worrall then scored at the other end, heading in Danny Imray's cross on his home debut. It was the defender's first goal since May 2024, when he was playing for Besiktas.
Cornerflick's match record places Worrall's opener in the 31st minute and Devine's equaliser five minutes later. Whiteman restored Wrexham's advantage in the 42nd minute, giving them a 2-1 half-time lead. Smith added the third in the 59th minute before Moore scored in the 63rd, turning a narrow advantage into a three-goal margin within four minutes.
Sky Sports reported that Whiteman's goal against his former club came from a low shot after a partially cleared cross. Preston substitute Brad Potts missed an opportunity after the interval, before Smith headed home Whiteman's corner. Whiteman therefore contributed both a goal and an assist, while Preston were unable to convert their chance to level again.
The match data published by Cornerflick also showed Wrexham's advantage across several measures. The home side recorded 62 per cent possession and attempted 17 shots to Preston's 11. Six of Wrexham's attempts were on target, compared with one for the visitors, while the corner count finished seven to two. Both teams had scored before the break, but only Wrexham added goals afterwards.
Sky Sports reported that the result lifted Wrexham to 14th with their third league win of the season. Preston remained bottom on four points from 11 matches, with Graham Alexander losing each of his first three games in charge. Parkinson praised his players' response and their execution of work done in training; Alexander pointed to preventable goals and missed opportunities as problems that still needed addressing.
