Wrexham claim first Championship win with 3-0 victory at Millwall
Wrexham earned their first Championship victory of the season by beating Millwall 3-0 in south London on Wednesday, delivering a decisive response after a winless opening three league matches. The result followed draws against Cardiff and Watford and a home defeat by Birmingham. The Guardian, carrying reporting from Agence France-Presse, said the win revived the Welsh club after it narrowly missed the playoffs last season.
Watch the highlights:
The breakthrough came before half-time through an own goal. Millwall defender Zak Sturge diverted a cross from Issa Kabore into his own net, giving Wrexham the lead and control of the contest. The visitors then increased their advantage shortly after the restart when striker Kieffer Moore struck from 20 yards.
Jacques Ekomie completed the scoring with a close-range finish, sealing a three-goal victory for Wrexham. The margin marked a sharp change in direction after the setback against Birmingham and gave the club a first league win of the new campaign. It also provided an early boost to a side seeking to challenge again near the top of the division.
For Millwall, the defeat extended a difficult run after an initially strong defensive start. They opened the season with clean-sheet wins over Bristol City and Norwich, but have now conceded eight goals across two matches. The loss on Wednesday came after a 5-1 defeat by Southampton on Saturday.
Millwall also sustained further personnel problems during the match. Striker Josh Coburn and midfielder Casper De Norre both went off injured, adding to the fitness concerns at the club. Their exits came a day after winger Femi Azeez joined Brighton in a transfer reported at £15 million.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Rumarn Burrell scored twice as Queens Park Rangers beat Cardiff 2-1, moving the team coached by Julien Stephan to 10 points from four matches. Burnley drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough after Ugo Raghouber cancelled out the opener from Aidan Morris, while Charlton remained unbeaten after Tyreece Campbell secured a 1-1 draw at West Brom. The results completed a busy Wednesday programme in the division.
