Wrexham edge out Oxford to climb back into sixth
Wrexham climbed back into the League One playoff places with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Oxford United at the Racecourse Ground, establishing a five-point buffer from the bottom of the pack.
The visitors took a shock lead through Josh McGowan in the 23rd minute, leaving Wrexham with work to do in the blistering afternoon heat. The Welsh side responded excellently, equalizing through Paul Mullin's 67th-minute strike before securing all three points when substitute James Jones headed home from close range with eight minutes remaining.
Phil Parkinson's side have now won four of their last five matches, a run of form that has transformed their season prospects. The victory moves Wrexham level on points with Barnsley in fifth, though the Yorkshire side have a game in hand heading into the business end of the campaign.
Mullin reflected on the importance of the win: 'Every match from now on is essentially a final. We know what's at stake and the fans create an incredible atmosphere here that drives us on. Oxford made it difficult but we showed our character to come back and win.'
Wrexham have now lost just once in twelve matches at their Racecourse Ground home, establishing themselves as one of the most dangerous sides in the division when playing in front of their passionate support. The Hollywood-owned club, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, continue their remarkable journey through the English football pyramid with promotion to the Championship now firmly within reach.
Parkinson praised his squad's response to going behind, adding: 'The character we've shown throughout this season really showed today. We could have panicked but we kept possession well and created quality chances. James Jones has been excellent from the bench all season and I'm delighted for him with that winner.'
Oxford remain seventh, outside the playoff spots on goal difference, with five matches remaining in a congested promotion race.
